サモスの修道院を見学する前に、中島先生からスペインの歴史について簡単な説明があった。
先史時代、ローマ帝国による支配、ゲルマン諸部族の侵入、西ゴート王国の成立、イスラーム勢力の進出、レコンキスタの開始……大まかな流れの後、聖ヤコブに話が移った。聖ヤコブの墓が発見されたのは９世紀のことで、880年代には既にパリにまでその話が伝播していたという。「マタモーロ（モーロ人殺し）」の名から分かるとおり、聖ヤコブはレコンキスタのみならず、十字軍の守護聖人としても知られ、広く信仰の対象となった。その拡大に際して、ビジャフランカ・デル・ビエルソにある「赦しの門」や、サンティアゴ大聖堂でのヤコブ像抱擁など、様々な手法が利用された。巡礼にまつわる奇跡譚も多く残されているようで、そのうちのいくつかを聞くことができた。
次いで、修道院の内部見学に移った。
案内役の修道士と思われる老人がサモスの修道院の歴史について簡単に話してくれた。６世紀頃から修道士がいたこと、９世紀半ばに一度廃院となり後に復興したこと、18世紀にはスペイン最大の修道院であったことなどである。

壁には聖人伝や、７つの大罪が描かれていることなどを修道士の方に教えてもらいながら、聖遺物のある部屋や、教会を見学した。
壁には何箇所かラテン語が刻まれており、図書室の入口上部には「図書室なき修道院は武器庫なき城のようなものであるClaustrum sine librario sicut castrum sine armamentario」と彫られており、案内役のさんからいきなりラテン語を訳すよう言われ、ラテン語って日常的に存在するんだ、というなんとも単純なことに感心・驚嘆しつつ、多少の時間をかけて何とか意味を伝えることができた。

It was a bit hard for me to translate it into Japanese without a dictionary .... Antes de entrar y visitar el monasterio de Samos, nos enseñaba Sra. Nakajima sobre la historia de España, por ejemplo sobre el tiempo prehistórica, el Imperio Romano, el Reino Visigodo, la invasión islámica, la reconquista y Santiago, cuyo sepulcro era descubierto en el siglo IX y que entonces se hacía el patrón de España en el cruzado. En el monasterio, un monje viejo nos mostraba las bellas artes y habitaciones del monasterio. Lo que a mí sorprendí mucho era la frase latina encima de la purta de la biblioteca que dice que "Claustrum sine librario sicut castrum sine armamentario," esto es, un monasterio sin biblioteca es como un castillo sin armería. Me es un poco difícil de trasladar esa frase a la lengua japonesa sin diccionario ....
