【写真：サンティアゴ・デ・コンポステーラ大聖堂（2008年9月12日）】


このブログは、基本的には2008年9月にスペインのサンティアゴ巡礼路を歩いた時の記録です。

筆者はキリスト教徒ではありませんが、歴史学を学ぶ学生として、カミーノ講習に参加し、多くの刺激を受けることができました。
各エントリィは帰国後に、巡礼中のメモ、日記、写真を参考にして書いたレポートを基に、加筆訂正を加える形で公開していく予定です。

巡礼に興味のある方、巡礼に行かれた方、皆様にお楽しみいただければと思います。

中島先生との別れ / Good bye Ms. Nakajima / Adiós, Sra. Nakajima

寮からバス停まで、カミーノを背負って歩いた荷物を再び背負って歩く。

バスの時間が近づいていた。

中島先生とはここでお別れである。
みんなで先生にお別れを言って、バスに乗り込んだ。ひとつの旅の終わりのような気がした。

12時55分。
バスがターミナルを出るとき、先生に思いっきり手を振って別れた。


ビーゴまでの車中はほとんど寝て過ごした。よくよく考えてみれば昨夜は4時頃に寝て8時過ぎに起きたのだから当然といえば当然である。
1分で1km以上進むバスに乗りながら、250kmの徒歩での巡礼を時折思い出しながら、バスに揺られた。

From the dormitory to the terminal, we walked carrying the luggage that we carried to Santiago. The time of departure was coming near, which meant the parting with Ms. Nakajima. When we ride in the bus, we said goodby to her, feeling an end of journey. It was twelve fifty-five that the bus left Santiago. On the bus to Vigo, I was almost asleep because it was four in the morning that I went to bed last night and it was around eight that I woke up. Desde la residencia hasta la terminal, andabamos llevando el equipaje que hemos llevado a Santiago. La hora de salida estaba acercandose, lo que significó la despedida con Sra. Nakajima. Cuando montamos en el autobús, dijimos adiós a ella, sintiendo un final de viaje. Era la uno menos cinco que el autobús se salió de Santiago. En el autobús a Vigo, yo estaba casi dormido, ya que eran las cuatro de la mañana que me fui a la cama anoche, y que se fue de alrededor de ocho que me desperté. サンティアゴのバスターミナルは想像していたより広かった。

この後、昼過ぎのバスでサンティアゴからビーゴVigoへ向かい、ビーゴ空港からパリへ飛び、来たとき同様にシャルル・ド・ゴール空港から成田空港へ向かう予定である。
荷物は寮に置いたままだし、バスの発車まではまだ時間がある。
というわけで、各自バスのチケットを購入して、時間をつぶすことにした。

街中を散策していると、ガリシア自治政府の建物があった。
さらに歩いていくと、エンパナーダを売っているお店があったので、みんなで買って食べながら少し休憩した。

荷物を取りに寮へ戻る。
バスのチケットを見ていると、サンティアゴを離れるのだという実感が徐々に湧いてきた。

The bus terminal of Santiago was larger than I had expected. That afternoon we're to move to Vigo, then we would fly to Paris and from Paris to Tokyo. We had a little time till the departure time, so after we bought the tickets to Vigo, we walked around the street. Passing by the building of Xunta de Galicia, we found a shop selling empanadas. We bought them and tasted them. Then we returned to the dormitory in order to pick up our luggage. Seeing my ticket to Vigo, I was realizing the departure. La terminal de autobuses de Santiago era más grande de lo que yo esperaba. Por la tarde hemos de ir a Vigo, luego volaría a París y de París a Tokio. Tuvimos un poco de tiempo hasta la hora de salida de autobus, así que después compramos los billetes a Vigo, caminamos por la calle. Pasando por el edificio de la Xunta de Galicia, nos encontramos con una tienda que vendía empanadas. Hemos compradolos y los comimos. Luego volvimos a la residencia para recoger nuestro equipaje. 朝のサンティアゴ / Morning of Santiago / Mañana en Santiago

集合時間がかなり遅めに設定されていたせいもあって、早めに目が覚めてしまった。
部屋にいるのももったいないので、街を散歩してから大聖堂へ行くことにした。

街をふらふらと歩いていると、サンティアゴやフィニステッラの写真つきのポストカードを売っていたので、友人にお土産として渡すべく購入した。

部屋に戻ってポストカードを置いて、みんなと大聖堂へ向かった。
大聖堂の中央の祭壇の上に祀られているヤコブ像に触るために、列に並んだ。
ヤコブ像は祭壇の上から大聖堂の入り口を向いているので、後ろからヤコブ像に触れる形になる。
大胆にも抱きついている巡礼者たちもいたのだが、やはり抱きつくのは畏れ多いような気がして、結局肩に触れる程度で済ませた。

大聖堂の外へ出て、空港へと向かうバスのチケットを買うべくターミナルへと向かった。
いよいよサンティアゴともお別れである。

When I woke up, there was enough time for walking around the streets till the meeting time to go to the Cathedral. So I got out of the dormitory and found a shop where beautiful picture postcards were selling. I bought some of them to give my friends in Japan. Then I went back to the dormitory and visited the Cathedral with the members. Waiting in line to touch the statue of St. James, I was feeling some kind of reverence. So I couldn't embrace the statue but just touched on the shoulder of it. Then we walked to the bus terminal to buy the tickets to the airport of Vigo. The time to say good bye to Santiago was coming. Cuando me desperté, había suficiente tiempo de caminar por las calles hasta la hora de reunión para ir a la Catedral. Así que salí de la residencia y encontré a una tienda donde hermosas tarjetas postales estaban vendidos. He comprado algunos de ellos para dar a mis amigos en Japón. Volví a la residencia y visitó la Catedral con los miembros. Poniendome en la cola para tocar la estatua de Santiago, me sentía una especie de reverencia. Así que no podía abrazar la estatua, sólo tocó en el hombro de la estatua. Luego nos dirigimos a la terminal de autobuses, para comprar los billetes hasta el aeropuerto de Vigo. 最後の夜 / The last night / La última noche

レストランから歩いて大学の寮に戻り、明日の出発の予定を確認してから各自の部屋に入った。

サンティアゴに戻ってきた時点で既に日付が変わっていたので、既にだいぶ遅い時間だったが、寝る前にメールを確認するために寮のパソコンスペースへ行った。
昨日、サンティアゴに到着した旨を伝えた友人たちからのメールを読んで、帰国後のことについて返信を書いた。とはいっても、あいかわらず日本語の入力環境がないので、つたない英語で、ではあるが。

明日は午前中にもう一度大聖堂に行き、聖ヤコブ像に触れるということだった。楽しみなようでもあり、畏れ多いような気持ちもあり、少し興奮したまま、シャワーを浴びてから眠りについた。

Before each of the members went back to their room, Ms. Nakajima told us the schedule for tomorrow. Then I went to the PC room of the dormitory to check e-mails. Reading some e-mails which were the replies to the ones I wrote yesterday, I replied to them in English because there weren't any keyboards with which I could write e-mails in Japanese. サンティアゴへ / Back to Santiago / Vuelta a Santiago

帰りのバスでも、ムシーア行きのバスと同様にうとうととしていたら、あっという間にサンティアゴに到着してしまった．

ムシーアでは結局何も食べなかったので、サンティアゴについてからの夕食となった。16人という大人数なので、入れるレストランを何とか探して、全員が席についた。

夕食が運ばれてくるまでに、講習メンバーの代表から、中島先生にお礼を言って、メッセージを書いたＴシャツを手渡した。
最後の夕食だ、ということにいまさら思い当たり、巡礼中のいろいろなことを思い出して話しながら、食事を楽しんだ。

While I was sleeping, the bus had arrived in Santiago. We didn't have dinner in Muxía, so we had to look for a restaurant where all of us could be seated. After ordering some food and drinks, one of the members said thank you to Ms. Nakajima on behalf of us and gave her the T-shirt that we wrote thanks on the bus. Mientras estaba durmiendo, el autobús había llegado a Santiago. No teníamos la cena en Muxía, así que tuvimos que buscar un restaurante donde habría asientos para todos nosotros. Después de ordenar algo de comida y bebidas, uno de los miembros dijo gracias a la Sra. Nakajima en nombre de nosotros, y le dio la camiseta en que escribimos palabras de gracias en el autobús. 地の果てへ / To the end of land / Al fin de tierra

サンティアゴに到着した翌日の朝は、なんとも言い表しがたい感情に包まれていた。

昨夜遅くまで飲んでいたため、若干の二日酔いと睡眠不足で思考が回っていないせいもあったが、もうサンティアゴを目指して歩く必要はないという安心と、この刺激的な旅ももうすぐ終わってしまうのだという焦燥が入り混じっていた。

この日はサンティアゴからさらに西、フィニステッラFinisterraとムシーアMuxíaを訪れた。フィニステッラはスペイン本土の最西端の町であり、「大地の終わり」を意味するこの町は巡礼者がサンティアゴを訪れた後にやってくる場所となっていた。

サンティアゴからフィニステッラまで100kmの道のりを歩いていく時間がないため、フィニステッラへはバスで向かった。徒歩のみで全て移動してきたこの10日間を思い出すと、車中で寂寞とした思いに駆られたと同時に、サンティアゴ大聖堂を目の当たりにした瞬間に襲ってきた感情の一部が理解できたような気がした。

When I woke up, I had a strange kind of feeling, which partly came from a hangover, partly from the fact that now we're in Santiago and from a fret in my heart feeling the end of this journey. This day we went to Finisterra and Muxía. Finisterra is a westernmost town of Spain, thus the pilgrims who finished their way to Santiago come to this place. As we had no time to walk 100km from Santiago to Finisterra, we took a bus. On the bus, I was remembering the days I walked el Camino and came to understood that lonely feeling a little. Cuando me levanté, tuve un sentimiento extraño, que en parte provenía de resaca, en parte por el hecho de que estabamos en Santiago y en parte de desazón en mi corazón, sintiendo el final de este viaje. Este día nos fuimos a Finisterra y Muxía. Finisterra es una villa más occidental de España, por lo que los peregrinos que han terminado su camino a Santiago, llegan a este lugar. Porque no teníamos tiempo para andar 100 km desde Santiago hasta Finisterrea, tomamos un autobús. バル / Bar

サンティアゴまでの巡礼を既に終えて、翌日はもう歩く必要もないということで、既に日付は変わっていたが、レストランの近くにあったバルへ行ってお酒を飲むことにした。

なぜだか狭い店内は非常に混んでいて騒がしく、ほとんどの人が立ったままお酒を飲んでいた。

注文したお酒を受け取った後は、講習のメンバー同士で話しているのももったいないと思ったので、近くで飲んでいる人たちに声をかけた。アルゼンチン人で今はバルセロナに住んでいる、というよく分からない経歴の２人組の男性だとか、サンティアゴに住んでいるおじいさんと話しながら飲んだ。酔っている上に、相変わらず英語を交えないと会話が成立しない箇所もあり、何を話したかはあまり覚えていない。

しばらくして、もう寮に帰って休む、というメンバーもいたので、一旦その場で解散した。もう少し飲みたいと思ったメンバーで次のバルに移動した。こちらもやはり人が多く満員に近かったが、ロック系の音楽もかかっていて、若い人が多かった。

再びビールを注文して、先ほどのバルで一緒に話していた人たちとしばらく飲んでいたが、立ったまま飲んでいたせいか、連日歩き続けたせいか分からないが、酔いが回ってきたので早々に退散することにした。

部屋に戻ると、既に3時を回っていたので、すぐに眠りに着いた。

For we had finished the pilgrimage and didn't have to walk any more, we went to a bar to drink more. It was already after midnight. The bar was a small one and full of people talking so loudly. I thought it exciting to talk with the people, so I speak to a few people around me. Drinking some beer, I talked with two Argentines who were then living in Barcelona, and with a old man living in Santiago. As always, I talked in Spanish and in English. Then, some members of the Course were leaving to rest in the dormitory. But me and some other members went to another bar, which was full of younger people and rock music. I was still talking with the Argentines, drinking another bottle of beer. It was very good night but I felt somehow tired, maybe because of long walk or drinking while standing. So I left there saying goodbye to them. When I came back to my room of the dormitory, it was already 3 o'clock, so I went to bed soon. (Photo: The second bar, 12 Sep 2008.)

Porque habíamos terminado la peregrinación y no teníamos que caminar más, fuimos a un bar para beber más. Ya era pasada la medianoche. El bar era pequeño y lleno de gente hablando en voz tan alta. Me pareció interesante hablar con la gente, así que hablaba con algunas personas a mi alrededor. Bebiendo un poco de cerveza, hablé con dos argentinos que vivían entonces en Barcelona, y con un anciano de Santiago. Como siempre, me habló en español y en inglés. Entonces, algunos miembros del Curso se iban a descansar en la residencia. Pero yo y otros miembros fueron a otro bar, que estaba lleno de gente más joven y la música rock. Todavía estaba hablando con los argentinos, bebiendo otra botella de cerveza. Era la noche muy buena, pero me sentía de alguna manera cansado, tal vez por caminata o beber de pie. サンティアゴでの夕食は、これまで通りレストランで取ることになった。

サンティアゴ大学からレストランまで、10分か15分ほど歩いただろうか。長い道のりを歩き終えた開放感も手伝ってか、他愛のない話をしながら店に入る。

運ばれてきた料理を食べながら、旅の途中の思い出話で盛り上がった。初日に、アストルガから歩いたこと。雨の中、高速道路の横をひたすら歩き続けたこと。山を越えて、30km以上歩いた日のこと。地元のお祭りに参加しておどったこと……。

話は尽きなかったが、仲間の一人が誕生日だったので、レストランの店員にお願いしてケーキを用意してもらった。サンティアゴに着いてからメンバーが用意したプレゼントを渡したところ、喜んでもらえたようだった。

食事の代金を支払って、レストランを出ようとしたとき、店員さんに「お店のＴシャツかっこいいね」と言うと、何故か人数分用意してくれた（その赤いＴシャツは、今も大事に取ってある）。

店員さんにお礼を言って、夜のサンティアゴへと出た。

Sorry for being so late.

We had dinner in a reastaurant. Since we left the dormitory, we kept talking so much about the pilgrimage we had done. Astorga, the rainy day, the day when we walked more than 30km, the local festival, and more .... During dinner, we had one member whose birthday was this day, so we gave her a present, which seemed to have pleased her, and we ate cake. When we're going out, we told a clerk that he weared a nice T-shirt, then he proposed to give it to all of us. We thanked him and recieved them. Now it's the time to enjoy the night of Santiago. Cenamos en un restaurante. Desde que salimos de la residencia, seguíamos hablando mucho sobre la peregrinación que habíamos hecho. Astorga, el día de lluvia, el día en que andaba más de 30 kilómetros, el festival local, y más .... Durante la cena, había un miembro cuyo cumpleaños fue el día de hoy, por lo que le dimos un regalo, que parecía placerle, y entonces comimos torta. Cuando vamos a salir del restaurante, dijimos a un empleado que se ponía una camiseta bonita, a continuación, nos proponía darlas a todos nosotros. Así que le dimos las gracias y los recibimos. 寮 / Dormitory / Residencia

待ち合わせ場所の大聖堂前広場に向かう途中、メリデ付近で一緒に歩いた巡礼者の女性陣と再会した。写真を撮ったりアドレスを交換したりした。

大聖堂から寮までは歩いて15分ほどだった。大学の寮と言っても、想像していたよりもずっときれいな建物だった。日本の、国立大学の学生寮からはとても想像できないような、きれいな外観・内装で、すべて一人部屋のようだった。
欧米と日本における教育への力の入れようの違いのようなものを感じた。

各自部屋に戻り、シャワーを浴びた後、夕食を食べに行くこととなった。

When I was walking to the square in front of the Cathdral, where we were to meet, I met some women that I had talked with when I was walking near Meride. We talked for seome time, took pictures and exchanged our e-mail addresses. From the square, we walked for about fifteen minutes to the dormitory, which was much better than I expected from ones in Japan. We were given a room for each person. Caminando a la plaza que está enfrente de la Cathdral, donde decidimos reunirnos, me encontré a algunas mujeres con quienes había hablado cuando estaba caminando cerca de Meride. Hablamos un momento, tomamos fotos e intercambiamos nuestras direcciones de email. Desde la plaza, caminamos durante unos quince minutos hasta la residencia, que era mucho mejor de lo que esperaba de los de Japón. Nos dieron una habitación para cada persona. 観光 / Sightseeing /Turismo

自治政府の方々と別れた後は宿泊予定のサンティアゴ大学の寮に向かった。

大聖堂から20分程歩いて目的のキャンパスに到着した。しかし中島先生が受付で話をすると、何か手違いがあって、本来泊まる予定だった寮とは別の寮に泊まることになったらしい。
その寮まで移動するのに時間がかかるため、予定を繰り上げて2、3時間市内を観光してから寮に向かうことになった。

観光、といっても特に何か目的があるわけでもなかったから、友人たちと別れて一人で市内をふらつくことにした。

ふらふらと歩いていると、本屋を見つけた。日本からスペイン語の本を入手しようとすると送料がかかるため、何か面白い本でもあれば買って帰ろうと思い、立ち寄ることにした。
結局、小さな本屋だったので専門書は見当たらなかったが、ラデロ・ケサーダによるスペイン中世史の概説書と、ジャック・ル・ゴフの『中世とは何か』のスペイン語版を購入した。

土産が自分用の本だけというわけにもいかないので、友人用に何枚かポストカードを購入し、さらに町の中をふらふらと歩き回った。

As we went to a campus of the University of Santiago, it somehow turned out that we were to stay in a domitory of another campus. So we changed the plan and decided to go sightseeing. Though I didn't know what to do, I found a bookstore, where I bought some Spanish books on medieval history. And there I also bought some postcards for my friends in Japan. 昼食会 / Lunch / Comida

新たに2、3人のガリシア自治政府役人の方が加わって、20人くらいで少し離れたレストランに歩いていった。

これまでカミーノを歩いてきて、昼食というとメヌー・デル・ディア、つまりメイン2皿にパンが付いてくる形式のものがほとんどだった。
今回もそんな感じだろうか、とぼんやり考えていたら、見事に予想が外れた。

レストランは、Ｔシャツで入るのはちょっと気が引けるような感じの洒落た内装だった。
席についたが、役人の方々とは少し離れた位置になってしまい、ほとんど話は出来なかった。
出てきた料理も、メヌーではなくて本格的なコース料理だった。

デザート、コーヒーまで出てきて、すっかり満腹になった後は、自治政府の方々にお礼を言って別れた。

目指すは本日の宿舎、サンティアゴ・デ･コンポステーラ大学である。

A few more officers of Galician government joined us and we went to the restaurant. I thought we would have menu del día, which we had many times while we were walking Camino, but it wasn't the case. We had a full-course meal. After eating, we said thanks to them and got apart, heading for the University of Santiago de Compostela, where we were to stay this night.

大聖堂の外で待っていたのは、アウグスティンとダヴィだった。
お互いに無事にサンティアゴまで来て再会できたことを喜びあった。

そうして写真を撮り終わると、メリデ付近で出会ったラケルたちにも再会できた。
ひとしきり話して写真を撮って、彼らとはお別れした。

その後、今回の講習を担当してくれたガリシア自治政府の役人の方と合流した。
地下にある小さなバルに入って、食前酒として一杯だけワインを飲んだ。

話によると、この後の昼食会は別のレストランであるらしい。

Outside of the Cathedral, Augustin and David were waiting for us. We were so happy that we could meet here again. We also found Raquel and others who we had met around Meride. We took photos each other. After that, officers of the Galician government joined us and we went to a underground bar, where we had a glass of wine as aperitif. Then they told us that we were having lunch in another restaurant.

ミサが始まると、大司教がしばらく話した後で、賛美歌が歌われた。
（どちらもほとんど内容は聞き取れなかった。）

そしてミサの最後に、ボタフメイロ（大香炉）が振られた。

元々は長旅をしてきた巡礼者たちの臭い消しのためにボタフメイロは利用されていたという。
これまで書いてきたように、今ではかなりシャワー設備が整えられており、お湯も利用可能なので必ずしも必要ではないが、ボタフメイロが大聖堂の中を大きく揺れ動く様子は中々に印象的だった。

ミサが終わってから、大聖堂の外へ出る前に祭壇の下にあるという聖ヤコブの墓を見学した。
祭壇上の聖ヤコブ像に触れることもできるらしいが、このときは機会を逃してしまった。

そして、外へ出ると久しぶりに見る顔があった。

After the Archbishop of Santiago talked, people sang hymns. Then the Botafumeiro was swung. I heard it was originally used in order to neutralize the smell of pilgrims who had walked long long distance. The scene was very impressive. After the mass, we visited the tomb of St. James but lost chance to touch the statue of St. James on the altar. When we got out of the Cathedral, we found some people we knew.

Dicen que el botafumeiro era usado para quitar el olor a los peregrinos que habían andado mucho tiempo. 事務所を出て、大聖堂で行われるミサに参列することになった。

大聖堂の中に入ると、既にかなりの人が集まっていた。
巡礼者だけではなく、サンティアゴの市民も来ているのだろうか。
何とか16人分の席をまとめて確保したものの、ミサの開始まではまだ30分ほどあるとのことだったので、少し街の中を見物して回った。

そして、大聖堂に戻ってしばらく座っていると、いよいよミサが始まった。

After we got the compostelana, we went to the Cathedral in order to attend a mass. There were a lot of people, but we could reserve the seats for all of us. We had about thirty minutes till the mass starts, so went to look around the city. When we were back, the mass was about to start. 大聖堂の右手へと続く道を辿っていくと、巡礼事務所Oficina de peregrinosの建物が見えて来た。
ここで、スタンプを押したクレデンシアルと引き換えに、巡礼証明書であるコンポステラーナを受け取るのだ。

事務所は二階にあるらしく、そこへ続く階段には大勢の巡礼者たちが並んでいた。
これまでに歩いて来た中で出会った巡礼者たちにも会えるかと期待したが、ここでは会うことはできなかった。

なかなか進まない列に30分ほど並んだ後で、ようやく受付に進むことができた。
クレデンシアルを渡して、コンポステラーナを受け取る。
ラテン語で書かれていたが、なんとなく内容は分かったから、友人たちに、帰国したら日本語の訳を送ると約束した。

遠くに小さく大聖堂らしき建物が見えてきた。

狭い石畳の道を抜けて、大聖堂脇の教会を通り過ぎると、広場に到着した。
巡礼者と観光客が大勢いて、これだけたくさんの人を見るのはポルトマリーンのお祭り以来だった。
我々も他の人たちにならって、ひとしきり写真を撮った。

大聖堂を見上げていると、これまでの道のりが思い出されて、複雑な気持ちになった。
楽しかった巡礼の旅は、確実に終わりへと近付いている。

Through the stone pavements, we finally came to the square in front of the Cathedral, where many pilgrims and tourists were taking photos.
