鉄の十字架 / The Cross of Iron / La Cruz de Hierro

朝食を済ませた後は、再び山道を歩き始めた。

フォンセバドンから30分ほど歩いただろうか。
行く手に大きなオブジェが見えてきた。

なんというか、太い木柱の上に結構大きい鉄製の十字架が備え付けられているのである。
木柱の根元のあたりには、なにやら石ころが大小さまざまに転がっていて、木柱を支えるようになっていた。

中島先生の解説によれば、過去の巡礼者たちが一定の距離を、願いを込めて石を運んできたのだという。
ちりも積もれば山となる、ということだろうか。
巡礼の歴史を感じる一幕であった。

十字架を見上げていると、後方から馬に乗って巡礼をする3人組がやってきた。
以前のエントリーでは書かなかったが、ラバナルのアルベルゲ前でくつろいでいたときに、彼らには一度あっているため、既に顔見知りであった。
彼らはおそらくラバナルのもう一つのアルベルゲに泊まっていたのだろう。

挨拶をすると、なんと馬に乗せてくれるというので、何故かグループを代表して乗ってみた。
少し肌寒いくらいの気温だったので、馬って温かいなぁとぼんやり思った。

乗馬中の写真はあるにはあるのだけれど、顔を出したくないのでゴメンナサイ。

Having walked 30 minutes or so from Foncebadón, we got to the Cross of Iron. I heard, of course from the director, Ms. Nakajima, that many pilgrims brought stones here hoping that thier wish come true. When we were leaving there, three men came here riding horse. Actually we've already known each other because they also stayed in Foncebadón (but in another albergue). And they allowed me to ride on a horse, which was really warm in a bit cold weather. Andábamos unos treinta minutos desde Foncebadón y llegamos a la Cruz de Hierro, a donde han llevado las piedras los peregrinos quien deseaban que sus deseos se realizaran. Tres peregrinos en caballos aquí llegaron. Me dieron la oportunidad de montar al caballo. El caballo estaba caliente al contrario del un poco mal tiempo. 朝焼け / Morning Glow / Resplandor del sol en mañana

翌朝は、時差ぼけの所為か、やはり６時頃に目が覚めた。
まだ外は暗い。

昨日のうちに買っておいたチョコレートのついたクッキーみたいなパンを食べて、出発の準備をする。どうも空模様がよくないらしく、カッパをすぐに出せるようにしておいた。

町の中はうっすらと街灯が灯っていたが、すぐに町を出ると暗い中を仲間たちと一緒に30分ほど歩いた。西に向かって歩くのだが、ときどき振り返って後ろを見ると、遠くにアストルガらしき町の灯りとともに、幻想的な朝焼けが見えた。

すでに８時を回っていたが、こんなものなのだろう。夜、暗くなるのもほとんど９時に近い時間であり、時間の感覚が日本にいるときとは随分違っていた。

6 am, I woke up but it was still dark. Having a chocolate cookie, I made myself ready for starting to walk. After we walked from Rabanal for 30 minutes or so, we could see the beautiful morning glow. ラバナルの夜 / Night in Rabanal / Noche de Rabanal

夜、洗濯物を取り込みに、洗濯物を干しておいた広場へ行くときには、星がきれいに見えた。普段東京で暮らしていると、絶対に見えないような星空だった。街灯もほとんどなく、正しく暗い夜を見詰めていると、東京にいるときには見えなかった何かが、星空以外にも見えてくる気がした。

天体観測のサークルに入っているメンバーから、夏の大三角と木星を教えてもらった。腕が悪いのか、カメラが悪いのか、写真には残せなかったが非常にきれいだった。この日泊まったアルベルゲにはインターネット環境がなかったので、おとなしく午後11時には就寝した。

ようやく、カミーノでの初日が終わる。

When I go out in order to pick up the laundry, lots of stars were beautifully shining in the sky. One of the members of the course told me that there was Jupiter brightly shining. I thought this can't be seen in Tokyo. Like this, I hoped that I could get something important that I couldn't see. In the albergue the Internet wasn't available, so I went to bed at around eleven. ラバナル・デル・カミーノ (2) / Rabanal del Camino (2)

昼食の後は、夕食まで自由時間だった。
洗濯機が小さい、というか人数が多すぎたために、２回目、３回目の洗濯をしつつ、ラバナルの町の中を歩き回ったりした。

小さな町の中には、決して広いとはいえないメインストリートが一本あった。
その道に沿って、教会や小さいお店があった他は、民家がいくつかあったが、多分人口は300人くらいの町だと思われた。

町の入口付近、つまりメインストリートの端に位置するアルベルゲから、アストルガから履いてきたごついトレッキングシューズをサンダルに履き替えて、メインストリートを歩いていくと、町のおじいちゃん・おばあちゃんたちに３、４組出会った。
空き地で遊んでいる子供たち（たしか10歳くらい）とは少しだけ会話をした。やはりヨーロッパ系の人は実際よりも年上に見えてしまう。

夕方6時ごろ、教会でミサを行うというので、参加させてもらった。
初めて参加したが、なるほどこういうものか、と思った。
詳しい形式などはよくわからなかったが。

それから、洗濯物を干している広場にあった机の周りに集まって仲間たちと話している時に、アルベルゲの裏手に羊の群れがやってきた（帰ってきた）。
牧羊犬はなかなか迫力があった。

この日は時間があったため、先生の提案で夕食を自炊することになった。
メインストリートの小さなお店で材料を買って、男子メンバーが調理を担当した。
ライスサラダとワインという簡単なものだったけれど、昼間のメヌーに劣らず美味しかった。

After lunch, we were free till dinner. So we walked around the town of Rabanal. Some of the members of the course and I attended the mass at the church. It was first time for me. There were sheep in the backyard of the albergue. This night we bought some food and the boys cooked dinner. It was as delicious as lunch. Of course, the wine too. メヌー / Today's Menu / Menú del día

シャワーや荷物の整理などで時間がかかり、午後３時半、ようやく昼食にありつけた。

アルベルゲの横にあるバルで食事をした。
大体７～９ユーロのメヌーmenúと呼ばれるメイン２品とパン・ワイン・デザートのコースが中心で、メイン１品のみを注文することもできた。メインは軽いものと肉・魚料理があり、それぞれ数種類用意されている中から選ぶ。
この日僕は、ボローニャ風スパゲッティ、ポークソテーそしてアイスクリームを注文した。
日本と比べると、やはり量が多い気もするが、歩いた後だったのでちょうどいいくらいだった。

食事をしながら、ここでようやく本格的な自己紹介をした。
現住所で区分すれば、東京がほとんどだったが、北海道、三重、福岡からの参加者もいた。

大学での専攻で区分すれば、自分の専門である歴史学に加えて、教育学、経済学、国際関係学、スペイン語、化学、建築学、陸水循環学とかなりばらついていることが分かった。スペイン語力についても、まだ一年生で始めて半年しかたっていないというメンバーから、アルゼンチンやスペインに半年から１年以上留学していて問題なくスペイン語で会話できるメンバーまでいた。自分は大体真ん中くらいのスペイン語力だったと思う。留学組の女の子たちにはいろいろとスペイン語を教えてもらった。

Around 3:30 in the afternoon, at last we had lunch in a bar next to the albergue. We had menu of the day (menú del día). I ate spaghetti, fried pork and icecream. During lunch we introduced ourselves in detail. There were diferent students in the course of Camino. For example some speak Spanish very well and some are students of education, economy, history, architecture and chemistry. En torno a las tres y media, comemos en un bar al lado del albergue. Comemos menú del día, quizá 7-9 euros. Comí pasta, cerdo frito y helado. Aquí nos introducimos uno a otro en detalle y conocí que había diferentes estudiantes en el curso, por ejemplo unos saben hablar español muy bien, unos son estudiantes de historia, pedagogía, economía, arquitectura y química. ラバナル・デル・カミーノ / Rabanal del Camino

ハリーとアウグスティンと、自分がスペイン史について勉強していることについて話したり、カミーノについて教えてもらったりしながら、ようやく初日の目的地であるラバナル・デル・カミーノRabanal del Caminoという町に到着したのは、確か２時過ぎだったと思う。

この日は先生もいれて16人のメンバーがほぼ同時に目的地の村に到着した。従って、洗濯機を回したり、シャワーを浴びたり、とにかく16人が一度に動くので時間がかかった。
けれど、全員がお湯のシャワーを浴びられただけましだっただろうか。残りの旅程では、アルベルゲ（巡礼宿）の給湯器の性能上、一番先に到着したメンバー以外はほぼ水のシャワーというアルベルゲも何度か登場した。中には水すらほとんど出ない、というものもあったのだが……それについてはまた、そのうち。

この日のアルベルゲは確か公営で、料金は5ユーロだったけれど、アストルガで泊まったアルベルゲより建物は小さいがそれぞれの部屋は割とゆったりしていた。

さて、ようやくカミーノ初日の昼食の時間ですが、また次回ということで今回はここまで。

Talking with Harry and Augustin, we came to the village of Rabanal del Camino at around 2 o'clock. At Rabanal the albergue cost us 5 euro each. 最初の友人 / The first friends / Los primeros amigos

この日の宿泊予定地であるラバナル・デル・カミーノRabanal del Caminoまでは、ペンダントを着けて、サンタ・カタリナからさらに10km以上歩いた。カスティーリャ・レオン州はわりと乾燥した地域なのか、低い草木が生えているほかは、茶色い土がむき出しになっているような場所がほとんどだった。

歩くスピードはやはり人それぞれ異なるが、一人というのも何だか心細いので、３～５人のグループで歩いた。

エル・ガンソの村を通り過ぎてしばらくはメンバーと一緒に歩いていたが、たまたまメンバーと離れて一人で歩いていたときに、これから先の道中でよく一緒に歩くことになるアウグスティンとハリーに出会った。アウグスティンはスペイン人で、ハリーはイギリス人だという。年は詳しく聞かなかったが、確か30前後だと言っていたように思う。

ハリーは、ジーンズで歩いていた僕を見て、「ジェームズ・ディーンみたいだな」と言っていたけれど、残念ながら日本・海外を問わず芸能に疎いので、ジーンズをはいているらしいということ以外は分からなかった。

二人と話した時はスペイン語に英語を交えて会話をしたのだけれど、僕はスペイン語の会話が苦手なので、どちらかというと英語で話していたように思う。けれど、スペイン語で質問されたりすると、途中で自分がどちらの言語をしゃべっているのか分からなくなって混乱することが多かった。特に、スペイン語の語彙が不足しているので、スペイン語での会話はそう長くは続かず、英語に切り替えようとしたりして、頭が痛くなった。

ここから先の道のりでも、多くの巡礼者たちと出会うことになるが、この二人が、一番最初に僕がちゃんと話をして、故に、一番長く一緒にいた二人である。

With a pendant of scallop on, I walked on down with other members of the course of Camino. Sometimes I walked alone and then I met the first friends on the Camino, whose names are Harry and Augustin. Harry was from England and Augustin from Spain. We three talked both in Spanish and English, which made me confused.... I sometimes forgot which language was the one we were using. Con un colgante de vieiro metálica, continuabamos andar en el Camino. Pero a veces andaba soló y aquí me encontré a Harry y a Augustin, los primeros amigos en el Camino. Harry es inglés y Augustin es español. Habíamos hablado en inglés y español, que me había confundido porque a veces yo no sabía en cuál idioma hablaba.... Después de este día, a muchas veces con ellos andaba en el Camino hasta Santiago de Compostela.
