Dormitory / Residencia

When I was walking to the square in front of the Cathdral, where we were to meet, I met some women that I had talked with when I was walking near Meride. We talked for seome time, took pictures and exchanged our e-mail addresses. From the square, we walked for about fifteen minutes to the dormitory, which was much better than I expected from ones in Japan. We were given a room for each person. So we took shower and went out to have dinner. (Photo 1: The Cathedral in the afternoon, 12 Sep 2008; Photo 2: The room of the dormitory, 12 Sep 2008.)

Sightseeing /Turismo

As we went to a campus of the University of Santiago, it somehow turned out that we were to stay in a domitory of another campus. So we changed the plan and decided to go sightseeing. Though I didn't know what to do, I found a bookstore, where I bought some Spanish books on medieval history. And there I also bought some postcards for my friends in Japan.

===(resume)==================
A few more officers of Galician government joined us and we went to the restaurant. I thought we would have menu del día, which we had many times while we were walking Camino, but it wasn't the case. We had a full-course meal. After eating, we said thanks to them and got apart, heading for the University of Santiago de Compostela, where we were to stay this night.

Pilgrims and aperitif / Peregrinos y aperitivo

Outside of the Cathedral, Augustin and David were waiting for us. We were so happy that we could meet here again. We also found Raquel and others who we had met around Meride. We took photos each other. After that, officers of the Galician government joined us and we went to a underground bar, where we had a glass of wine as aperitif. Then they told us that we were having lunch in another restaurant.

(2) / Mass (2) / Misa (2)

===(resume)==================
After the Archbishop of Santiago talked, people sang hymns. Then the Botafumeiro was swung. I heard it was originally used in order to neutralize the smell of pilgrims who had walked long long distance. The scene was very impressive. After the mass, we visited the tomb of St. James but lost chance to touch the statue of St. James on the altar. When we got out of the Cathedral, we found some people we knew.

===(resumen)=================

Walking to the right side of the cathedral, we found the Pilgrim's Office, where we were to get "Compostelana" that testifies our pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. When we were waiting in line, I hoped to meet some of the pilgrims that I had met on Camino, but I couldn't. After about thirty minutes, we got the Compostelana, which was written in Latin. So I promised my friends to translate it into Japanese.

Only a little distance left. Under a little cloudy sky, we went through the streets which had many old buildings. 目指せ大聖堂 / Toward the Cathedral / Hacia la Catedral

To Santiago / A Santiago

Last dinner on Camino / Última cena en el Camino

Iba a Madrid, Cordoba, Toledo, Barcelona y Zaragoza. Muchissimas gracias.

===(resume)==================
(This is what I spoke in front of the officers.) I could have a lot of experiences in the course of Camino de Santiago. First, I could improve my Spanish by talking with many pilgrims and inhabitants. Second, I could study a lot about the history of the pilgrimage to Santiago, which made me feel like studying much more about the whole history of Spain. I would like to say thank you to all the ones who helped me with this pilgrimage.
=============================

===(要約)=================

(1) / Presentation (1) / Presentación (1)

(2) / Monte do Gozo (2)

Having walked through a small village in front of the Monte do Gozo, we could see that statue. From there, the city of Santiago de Compostela and the albergue of Monte do Gozo can be seen. The albergue rather seemed like a camp. It was very very big and seemed to be able to accommodate more than 1,500 people. Thus we could somehow find the reception office. / It's near. / Está cerca.

When I was finishing the sandwich, some members arrived. The old men, saying that they were going to get to Santiago before sun sets, left us at the bar. I stayed in the bar for a moment waiting for the members. After we started to walk, we hardly find difficult ways. There was only one hill, from which we could see a small statue standing on Monte do Gozo. Feeling happy to see the destination, I was also feeling a little sad because the pilgrimage was going to finish .... (Photo: Monte do Gozo seen from far, 11 Sep 2008.)

(Foto: Monte do Gozo estaba lejos, 11 sep 2008.)

Two old men / Dos viejos

When I was finishing the road by the airport, I met two old men. As usual we introduced each other and talked as we walked. They were Spanish but sometimes talked in English, to which I was really thankful for I wasn't still used to talk in Spanish. As we went on, we found a bar and rested there. I had a glass of cola and a sandwich. (Photo: Graffiti on the road, 11 Sep 2008.)

(1) / Monte do Gozo (1)

Monte do Gozo

===(resume)==================
It's been ten days since we started to walk this way. This day we headed for Monte do Gozo, which means "Mountain of Joy" and is located very close to Santiago de Compostela. As yesterday, Ms. Nakajima told us not to walk together but I could hardly find other pilgrims and I walked alone by the Airport of Santiago.

===(resume)==================
Drunk wine in the pizzeria, I had one thing to do back in the albergue. Ms. Nakajima had told us that we should be prepared for the presentation about this pilgrimage before the officers of the local government of Galicia in an albergue of Monte do Gozo tomorrow. It was a little hard for me, being drunken, to write an essay in Spanish, so I just thought of the outline and went to bed. (Photo: Arzua at dawn, 11 Sep 2008.)

Pizza

===(resume)==================
When we went out after the class, it was already dark. This day we had dinner in a pizzeria near the albergue. There were three or four members for each table. Though there were many kinds of pizza, we chose a pizza with seafood and a dish of beef à la crème with rice. Both were very delicious. Of course, the wine too. (Photo 1: Pizza, 10 Sep 2008; Photo 2: The beef à la crème with rice, 10 Sep 2008.)

(3) / Lecture in Arzua (3) / Clase en Arzua (3)

===(resume)==================
Each pilgrimage has common characters. The one to Santiago has Finisterra as other target than Santiago and St. James is said to have come to Santiago on a stone boat. Like that, pilgrimage has something to do with water and stone, which is in turn related to purity. This class made me know that there were many kinds of pilgrimage which have different systems but at some points look alike.
=============================

===(resumen)=================

(2) / Lecture in Arzua (2) / Clase en Arzua (2)

===(resume)==================
Pilgrimage can be done personally or collectively, once in a year or all the year round. Or, like the one of the Aborigine, there exists a pilgrimage which has no static route and is constituted of singing. A pilgrimage which is done during a certain season is called Romeria. It was, at first, aimed at celebrating the harvest. There also exists something like a credencial of the pilgrimage to Santiago, for example in ancient Egypt.
=============================

===(resumen)=================

(1) / Lecture in Arzua (1) / Clase en Arzua (1)

===(resume)==================
Called by Ms. Nakajima, we got together in a building like a church which was near the albergue. Not only the members of the course but also the pilgrims staying in the same albergue were there to be given a lecture on the pilgrimages of the world. Most of the world has its own pilgrimage. In Japan, there is one called "Henro(遍路)". Islam has a pilgrimage called "Hajj", which is said to be the duty of Islam. Talking about the christianity, there are differences between Protestantism and Catholic, one of which is that Protestantism wasn't apt to encourage pilgrimage though nowadays it tends to do so making reference to the pilgrimage to Santiago.
=============================

===(resumen)=================

Beer / Cerveza

===(resume)==================
As always, while we were taking shower, the other members arrived at the albergue. After they took shower, we did the laundries and went to a bar in Arzua. We had tortilla, some sausages and drank beer, which tasted really good after 30 kilometer's walk. After eating, we went to a supermarket to buy some food for breakfast. When we'er back to the albergue, Ms. Nakajima told us that it was the time for the lecture. (Photo: Beer that I had drunk in an octopus restaurant of Meride, 10 Sep 2008.)

Arriving at Arzua / Llegando a Arzua

I walked alone till Arzua. Though it wasn't so hot, the long road covered with asphalt made me feel thirsty. When I got to Arzua, I asked a man where the public albergue was. He kindly taught me and I could find some members in the albergue, where they had already taken shower. (Photo: Arriving at Arzua, 10 Sep 2008.)

(3) / New Amigos (3) / Nuevos amigos (3)

At the suburb of Meride, I met some pilgrims that I had met before Meride. We introduced each other. They were Marisa, Raquel and Yolanda, who were from Andalusia. When I pronounced Raquel's name, I was told that I pronounced the first "R" wrongly. While we're walking together, two other pilgrims, Reme and Juan, joined us. Because they were to stay a town that wasn't my destination, I said good by to them and continued to walk heading for Arzua.
